Color: light brown
Smell: classic sweet bourbon nose. Plenty of vanilla corn sweetness along with some caramel and a little bit of mint in the background. Very nice.
Taste: really nice. There's more rye influence throughout the palate than there was on the nose. Definitely caramel sweetness upfront, but the transition brings in a peppery rye kick and some leather/baking spices that carry through the medium-length finish.
Overall: this is great stuff, and a tremendous value. What's unique to me about this is that the nose leads you to believe it's going to be all low-rye bourbon sweetness, but then the rye smacks you once you take a sip. Great balance throughout. Highly recommended, and solidly in the B+/A- range for me. In an ideal world, there's a little more complexity from more time in the barrel, but come on--it's only $25! I'm going to be excited to try their 10 year at some point.
