Redbreast
Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey
Aged 12 Years
40% ABV (80 proof)
~$45 (sample taken from Dad's house)
Color: light golden brown
Smell: soft and approachable, but complex. There is a good balance of peach/pear sweetness alongside toasted oak and a little nuttiness from (presumably) the sherry influence.
Taste: good stuff, with great creamy mouthfeel. Everything from the nose comes through on the palate. A wave of delicate fruit and honey sweetness is quickly complimented by a subtle nuttiness and some toasted oak. The finish doesn't linger very long, but it's very smooth. Only gripe is that it finishes a with a little too much malty tartness - hard to describe, but it's almost a bit metallic. Not at all a dealbreaker, just not what I was expecting.
Overall: really solid whiskey, B+ for me. I like it slightly more than Green Spot - I think it's a smoother customer and more complex, most likely stemming from the additional aging time. Everything is in great balance, and it makes me really excited to taste the cask strength, 15 year, and (dreaming) 21 year expressions.
